Kent State to face Wyoming in famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 21

Kent State Golden Flashes will be competing against the Wyoming Cowboys in Boise.

For the fifth time in program history, Kent State is going bowling.

The Golden Flashes on Sunday accepted an invitation to play the Wyoming Cowboys in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, one day after losing to Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference football title game. The matchup will take place Dec. 21 on the blue turf of Albertsons Stadium in Boise, home of the Boise State Broncos.

Behind a high-powered offense under fourth-year coach Sean Lewis, KSU (7-6) earned its second-ever MAC East division championship in 2021. Quarterback and Grafton native Dustin Crum put up 3,555 total yards and 27 combined touchdowns to take home the Vern Smith Leadership Award as the conference's MVP.

Wyoming (6-6) are playing in the postseason for the fourth time under eighth-year coach Craig Bohl. The Cowboys got off to a 4-0 start before losing six of eight down the stretch, although they did post a resounding 44-17 victory over eventual Mountain West Conference champion Utah State in Week 12 to clinch bowl eligibility. They are led by All-MWC linebacker Chad Muma, who is second in the league with 129 tackles (7 1/2 for a loss) to go with three interceptions.

This will be the first-ever meeting on the football field between Kent State and Wyoming, although the Cowboys did beat NIU 50-43 back in Week 2. The Huskies defeated the Flashes 41-23 Saturday in Detroit, and will face Coastal Carolina on Dec. 17 at the Cure Bowl in Orlando.

This just the third bowl appearance for KSU in the past 49 years. In 2019, Lewis and the Flashes gave the team its first postseason with by beating Utah State 51-41 in the Frisco Bowl.
