Idaho senators address Legislature

Idaho Sens. Jim Risch and Mike Crapo spent time Wednesday to address the state Legislature about the latest from Washington, D.C.

BOISE - Idaho Sens. Mike Crapo and Jim Risch stopped by the Statehouse Wednesday to give an update on how things are going in Washington, D.C.

While first speaking for about 20 minutes to the House of Representatives, the pair highlighted some of the accomplishments Congress has made as of late.

Sen. Crapo spoke first and said he is happy with the solid conservative agenda in Washington right now. He says though that the divided political climate is making it hard to get things done in a time effective way.

Crapo went on to say that he knows there are lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in Congress that want to "get into a space" were they can work in a bi-partisan way on issues they can find common ground on.

"I don't know if I've seen it more contentious and partisan. We are seeing the effort, I believe it is an effort primarily focused to stop the Trump administration from even standing fully up, let alone achieving its agenda," said Crapo.

During his time addressing state lawmakers, Sen. Risch spoke about how he doesn't think President Trump has gotten enough credit for his work in office.

One example Risch gave was about the recent tax rate cuts. He says the cuts were a great thing to do to, at the corporate and family level.

Risch explained that many businesses are leaving the U.S. for countries with lower tax rates.

“What did you hear, oh this is horrible, were giving tax breaks to these large corporations! Well what way do you want it folks? Do you want them leaving or have them here and paying lower taxes? It was a great thing to do," said Risch.

Risch went on to say that critics of the tax cut that say it is only adding to the national debt are simply wrong.

The pair also addressed the state Senate Wednesday morning. Both Risch and Crapo thanked Idaho lawmakers for their service to the state.
