VERIFY: Raul Labrador on opponents, Trump

In our latest ad watch, we take a closer look at a new campaign ad for Raul Labrador.

The latest ad from the Raul Labrador campaign makes a small mistake at the beginning of the ad. Again, it's small, but it is worth noting.

The ad misquotes a fact-check piece KTVB did on April 5th. The ad quotes KTVB using the phrase "factually inaccurate," in describing an attack made by a political action committee against Labrador.

The phrase used in our report was "factually incorrect." The differences are slight, but the meaning behind the phrasing is the same.

Claim two in the ad features Labrador saying, "Let me set the record straight, I support President Trump. I campaigned for him and I stood with him to repeal Obamacare."

This claim is correct. Labrador has been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump.

Like President Trump, Labrador has long been a big supporter of repealing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

But, Labrador and President Trump have not always agreed on what to do about Obamacare.

Last year, Trump got into a very public disagreement with the Freedom Caucus, a far-right conservative group in Congress co-founded by Labrador.

Labrador and the caucus refused to vote for Trump's so-called compromise on Obamacare, The 2017 Affordable Care Act. That act would have repealed some parts of Obamacare, but not all of it.

VERIFY: Labrador claims attack ad is a lie

After Labrador and his caucus helped defeat the bill, Trump tweeted, -- "the Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don't get on the team and fast. We must fight them and Dems in 2018."

Labrador responded by saying that it's "more important to do it right than to do it fast."

So we can verify, Labrador and Trump have both fought against Obamacare, but they have not always agreed on how to do it.

The third claim in the ad features Labrador saying, "President Trump supports my bill to end illegal immigration and sanctuary cities."

This claim is true. In a 2018 immigration bill co-sponsored by Labrador and endorsed by President Trump, Labrador detailed a plan in part to build a border wall and to end the visa lottery system.

That bill was introduced this past January but has had little progress since but, we can Verify, Labrador and Trump have worked closely on their immigration agendas.
