BOISE - It's no secret that Boiseans love their dogs - and Boise is known for its parks. Turns out the City of Trees is doing a pretty good job of catering to our four-legged friends.

A new survey by the Trust for Public Land found that Boise is tops in the nation when it comes to number of dog parks per capita.

“This year, we decided to take a closer look at the dog parks data because they are becoming so popular,” said Charlie McCabe, director of the Trust's Center for City Park Excellence. “That led to these rankings of cities with the most dog parks relative to population.”

According to the survey, there are now 774 off-leash dog parks in the nation’s 100 largest cities, an increase of 38 over 2017. Since 2009, the first year that the survey included dog parks for these cities, their number has increased 40 percent.

The data was released ahead of National Puppy Day, on Friday, March 23.

The survey found that Boise has 15 dog parks, or 6.7 per 100,000 residents.

Portland, Ore., and Henderson, Nev., tied for second with 5.2 dog parks per 100,000 residents.

Other top cities include Norfolk, Va., Las Vegas, Nev., and Madison, Wis.

New York City has the most dog parks, with 140 off-leash dog areas. But because the rankings are based on the number of parks per 100,000 population, New York and some other very large cities are pushed further down the list.
