HOMEDALE - As the Soda Fire expanded to nearly 220,000 acres on Thursday, more areas were being affected.

Firefighters are making good progress, and they are encouraging folks to stay away from Silver City.

"We found out this afternoon that this afternoon that the road was going to be closed off," Avalanche Building owner Carol said.

Chadwick was talking about the road to historic Silver City - the newest area threatened by the fire.

Now, Chadwick hopes for the best.

"Hopefully they can redirect It hopefully get a handle on it," she said.

But it's not all about hoping.

Many residents out were actually chipping in and helping to control the fire.

Vern Tunnell's first-person video went viral - as they tried to stop the flames from spreading to livestock.

"There was a lot of ranchers there with their stock trucks and so everybody pitched in and we were trying to see if we could stop some of that from spreading," he said.

But the flames were too fierce.

He says the Soda Fire has taken everyone by surprise.

And as a property owner in silver city as well, he believes higher elevation could change the face of this fire.

"When you start moving up there it gets into the aspens - into higher, little wetter," he said. "The meadows are still a little bit of green in them and there is a lot of canyons in between, so we are hoping with those combinations that it will help slow it down enough that BLM can get a handle on it."

Upper Reynolds Creek Road and the Jump Creek recreational site are closed. Silver City is also closed, according to Owyhee County. Homeowners are being allowed in, but all others are asked to stay away.

All access roads to Silver City are closed, including Silver City Road, Cow Creek Road, and Trout Creek Road.
