Lost dog rescued 15 days after rollover near Boise Stage Stop

Staff at the Idaho Humane Society refused to give up on the search for Apollo.

BOISE -- A beloved pet has been found safe more than two weeks after he disappeared in the aftermath of a crash near the Boise Stage Stop.

According to the Idaho Humane Society, Apollo - a black and white terrier mix - ran away out into the desert after a rollover crash on I-84 just after Christmas.

Police officers responding to the crash called the Idaho Humane Society for help, but the dog was nowhere to be found. Complicating matters, a fresh layer of snow had fallen, making Apollo's white coat even harder to spot.

But staff at the Idaho Humane Society did not give up.

Employees frequently visited the area where the crash happened, leaving fresh food and water for Apollo and asking others in the community to keep an eye out for the dog. Humane officers even took to driving around in their personal vehicles, hoping to spot him.

"I went out into the desert looking for Apollo, to see if I could locate any tracks," Humane Officer Staley said in a press relelase. "A buddy of mine helped by the hiking around the area and several other officers with four wheelers were looking for Apollo on their days off as well."

After 15 days, their vigilance paid off. The Idaho Humane Society got a call: Apollo had been spotted.

"I looked out the window and saw him snooping around," said David Banks, a caretaker at the Double Tapp Range.

Humane officers quickly drove out to the gun range and rescued Apollo, bringing him back to the IHS Veterinary Medical Center for veterinary care.

Banks said Apollo's journey was not the first time a lost dog has ended up at the Double Tapp Range. Another dog was reunited with her owners after jumping out of a vehicle while her owner's back was turned.

"A red Doberman named Tallie… had been out here a couple weeks after getting out of the Stage Stop last year," he said. "They were happy to get her back."

Apollo was checked out at the clinic, then joyfully reunited with his family, at no cost to the owners, according to the Idaho Humane Society.
