GRANGEVILLE -- A 21-year-old Cottonwood man was found dead in his cell Thursday less than a day after he was arrested.
According to the Idaho County Sheriff's Office, Justin R. Ross was booked into the Idaho County Jail at 9:45 a.m. for failure to pay fines on a trespassing to hunt without permission conviction.
Ross told jail staff he was under the influence of an intoxicant, and was having trouble speaking and keeping his balance. He was placed in a maximum security cell, where staff conducted safety checks every 15 minutes.
At about 10:30 p.m., jail employees checking on Ross noticed he did not appear to be breathing. They went into the cell and attempted to revive him with CPR, but were not successful.
Ross was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death.
The sheriff's office has not released what type of intoxicant Ross was under the influence of, and it's unclear whether that substance contributed to his death.
The Kamiah Marshal’s Office has been called in to investigate.
