LEWISTON, Idaho – A rescue group found and saved a Rottweiler-chow mix dog and her puppies in Lewiston after she was shot twice.

It’s unclear how Merida - the dog - was shot, but she is expected to make a full recovery. She gave birth to eight puppies, six of which survived.

The online Facebook group, Zeus’s Friends, found the dogs late last month, some with dangerous infections and viruses. They are not sure if the dog was shot while she was pregnant or after she had given birth, but they say since they’ve rescued Merida, she has not stopped smiling or playing.

"So far she loves everyone she has met including other dogs, cats and people," Raechel Irby, one of the Zeus's Friends administrators said. "She hasn't stopped smiling since we got her out."

They said their goal is to find safe homes for the puppies and mom, when they are ready. The babies are about 11-12 weeks old.

If you would like to adopt, you can contact the group on Facebook here. Typically, group administrator Rita Leslie said, they focus on reuniting people with their lost animals, not re-homing them.
