Free feminine hygiene kits for Boise's homeless

A local woman is raising money to put together feminine hygiene kits for the homeless.

BOISE - For most women, it’s hard to imagine not being able to afford feminine hygiene supplies.

But it’s a problem many homeless women face and it’s an issue Boisean Macarah Heller can no longer ignore.

"The last couple years all over my Facebook feed I have been seeing videos about the difficulties that people who menstruate face within the homeless community," Heller said.

This past weekend Heller took action.

She set up a GoFundMe account and all donations will go toward purchasing feminine hygiene products.

"We will be offering tampons, pads, wipes, and also menstrual cups, so it just of depends on your preference," Heller said.

She estimates it will cost somewhere between $5 and $10 to purchase supplies for each kit. She'll then pack them in a reusable, waterproof bag.

"So when it’s raining and snowing they can keep things important to them dry," Heller said.

As of just Monday, Heller had reached more than half of her fundraising goal. Once fulfilled, she plans to distribute the packs personally.

"I don't just want to just drop the products off to them, I truly want to get to know them and hear their stories and what struggles they are facing to know them as people because they are human, not just a faceless group of homeless people," she said. "We want to connect directly with them."

Depending on the need, Heller says she's also considering dropping supplies off at local homeless shelters.

"It’s very small but it feels like enough that I can try to help someone who isn’t as privileged as I am and try to make a difference."
