Communities pay tribute to those who died in 9/11 attacks

Seventeen years after the events of September 11, 2001, Idaho communities paid tribute to those who lost their lives.

NAMPA — On Tuesday, communities across Idaho and the United States are remembering the events of September 11, 2001. A day when the U.S. was attacked exactly 17 years ago.

One of those attacks happened in New York City, where two planes flew into the World Trade Center towers. At the 9/11 memorial in Boise, a piece of the WTC, a 10-foot beam, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made.

One event in the Treasure Valley Tuesday was in Nampa, where the community gathered to remember the events of 9/11.

The ceremony, put on by the Nampa fire and police departments, included a flag ceremony and the ringing of the last alarm, which is a tradition in fire departments when a firefighter dies in the line of duty.

A tradition centered around remembering the heroes we lost on 9/11

"We love our country," said Nampa Fire Chief Phil Roberts. "I think it's important just for the impact it had on our country, and how it changed our country."

A country that came together then in the face of great terror, and comes together now to remember the Americans we lost 17 years ago.

"Most people would run away from that and those members from all walks, military, firefighters, police, they all continued to run in and help their fellow man," said Roberts.

Also, a time to promise that we will never forget men like Nampa native Ron Vauk, who was killed on 9/11 in the attack on the Pentagon.

Vauk, a 1982 graduate of Nampa High School, was 37.

On Tuesday, Idaho, and the entire country stopped to reflect and remember.

"It's just a pause, to be grateful," said Roberts.
