BOUNDARY COUNTY, Idaho — A grizzly bear that attacked and killed sheep in Boundary County, Idaho has been captured and euthanized.

Idaho Fish and Game (IFG) announced it captured the large adult male grizzly bear after a series of livestock losses.

Fish and Game were first alerted to the bear on Sept. 8, when sheep were reported missing near Naples. Officers found grizzly bear tracks near the sheep pen.

Officers set a trap that evening and although the bear returned and killed another sheep, it did not enter the trap. Additional traps were then set on Sept. 9 and the remaining livestock was corralled in a temporary electric fence to try and keep it safe.

Fish and Game reports the bear returned overnight on Sept. 11 and was successfully trapped.

IFG and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made the decision to euthanize the bear after it was captured. IFG said the decision was made "due to the bear’s repeated behaviors of killing livestock within close proximity of a home."

This is the second grizzly bear to be euthanized in Boundary County in 2022. IFG reports there has been a series of livestock losses related to grizzly bears this spring and summer.

Grizzly bears in Idaho are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act
