They say you can't judge a book by its cover.

But now the "Bells for Books" bookmobile might be an exception.

Thanks to a $15,000 grant from the Greater Boise Area Rotary Foundation, the outside of the bookmobile received a makeover that better matches the fun for the kids of Garden City who go inside.

The bus travels to the doorstep of children who may otherwise not be able to go to a library.

About 8,000 books are checked out of the bookmobile each year, but the program is most needed over the summer.

"In the summertime when you go home if you don't have access to books you start sliding back,” said Garden City Library Director Lindsey Pettyjohn. “They call it the summer slide that everyone is talking about. So getting books, getting fun books in kids’ hands is just critical to keeping up everything they've learned."

This is the bookmobile's 23rd year in operation.
