BOISE - A driver was arrested Saturday afternoon, after law enforcement say he led police and deputies on a high-speed chase along Interstate 84 that spanned three counties.

Elmore County Sheriff Mike Hollinshead said in a Facebook post on Sunday that his office was notified after an Ada County deputy spotted a Nissan Armada going about 120 miles per hour and passing vehicles on the right shoulder as it traveled east on I-84.

Because of safety concerns, the Ada County deputy did not pursue the speeding vehicle. A short time later, Elmore County dispatch began receiving reports of the same speeding vehicle passing others on the right shoulder of I-84 between Boise and Mountain Home. Hollinshead noted that the driver was not being pursued at that time.

As the SUV passed by Mountain Home, Elmore County deputies picked up the chase, and the Armada's driver sped up to more than 120 miles per hour, Hollinshead said.

As the chase crossed through Gooding County and into Jerome County, the suspect continued at a high rate of speed, passing dozens of vehicles on the right shoulder.

Hollinshead said the driver never dropped below 100 miles per hour during the pursuit, regardless of the actions of law enforcement. After several attempts, the vehicle struck a set of spike strips flattening three of four tires.

The driver was finally taken into custody just outside the Jerome city limits. According to Hollinshead, the driver had been observed driving recklessly at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour in four counties, and was actively pursued for 88 miles.

The driver, who has not yet been identified, is facing felony charges in at least three counties.

The pursuit involved officers and deputies from six different departments, including the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, Gooding County Sheriff’s Office, Gooding Police Department, Jerome County Sheriff’s Office, Jerome Police Department, and Idaho State Police.

An investigation into the chase is underway.
