How to see the information Facebook is archiving

It takes about 20 minutes to process the request, but then Facebook sends you a zip file with loads of archived information.

Facebook keeps track of your old timeline interactions, the messages and pictures you sent, but also the advertisers that have your contact information and for many users, the names and phone numbers on their smartphones.

To see just how deep the information rabbit hole goes, go to “Settings,” and scroll to the bottom where it says “download a copy of your Facebook data.”

It takes about 20 minutes to process the request, but then Facebook sends you a zip file with loads of archived information.

"Everyone uses your social media to find you,” said Miles O’Kelly, who uses Facebook for business and personal accounts. “It's a giant breach of privacy."

O’Kelly owns a food truck and depends on social media to find customers, so he has no choice but to use Facebook, but thousands of other users are threatening to delete their accounts.

Facebook recently announced the information of thousands of users ended up in the hands of Cambridge Analytica, a company which touts itself as playing a pivotal role in winning presidential races in the United States, by harnessing the digital information of over 230 million American voters to persuade them to act using specifically tailored language and visuals.

Now some users are learning just how much of their information Facebook has archived and they're unable to do anything about it.

"It almost cripples us in a way,” O’Kelly said.

Now that you know exactly how much information is on stored on Facebook servers, what next?

You can start by going back into settings to manage your apps it won't go back and erase the data that's already stored, but it could prevent access to your information moving forward.
