ROSEBURG, Ore. - A 28-year-old man accused of tossing and slamming a toddler more than a year ago has been convicted of assault and criminal mistreatment.
Justin Trent Griffin stood trial last week in Douglas County Circuit Court for the November 2007 beating of his former girlfriend's 3-year-old son.
Photographs presented in court showed the boy's bruises. The News-Review newspaper in Roseburg reported on its Web site Tuesday that the boy was hospitalized for several days.
A defense attorney argued Griffin didn't intend to hurt the boy and didn't realize his actions because he was high on methadone and prescription sleeping pills at the time.
Sentencing is set for May 11.
