PORTLAND, Ore. -- An 18-month-old Idaho boy survived a three-story fall out of an apartment window when the screen gave out Wednesday morning.
Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies said Nicholas Enriques was taken to the hospital conscious and breathing after he fell 24 feet and landed on the grass outside the apartment in Happy Valley.
An apartment maintenance worker heard the sound as the toddler hit the ground, then told deputies he could see the screen drifting down to the ground, before he called 911.
A woman in the apartment at the time said she was taking a shower when Enriques apparently climbed up the couch next to the window, leading to the fall.
Deputies said Nicholas was in Portland for the summer to stay with his 18-year old brother and his girlfriend.
According to authorities, the girlfriend was in the shower when Nicholas fell out the window and had left the child unsupervised.
The toddler was taken to Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland for treatment.
"I think he's going to be doing really well," Clackamas Detective Jim Strovink said. "They're really resilient at that age, it's amazing."
